Come and Get It

Barney Glasgow is a lumberjack working the Wisconsin woods, and he wants to rise. He loves Lotta, a saloon singer, and leaves her to marry his employer's daughter; that is how the timber becomes his. Years pass and he is rich and alone. One day, at his old friend's place, he meets Lotta's daughter, who is the image of her mother and is also called Lotta. Barney sets about buying his youth back. The girl, meanwhile, is looking at his son. William Wyler and Howard Hawks are both credited as directors; ninety-nine minutes. The director changed mid-production and both names stayed on the film. It is adapted from Edna Ferber's novel, with Edward Arnold as Barney and Frances Farmer as both Lottas. Walter Brennan won the first supporting actor Oscar ever awarded for it.
