What Come Closer Is About
Tom Nesher's 2024 Israeli film follows Eden after her brother's death. In the middle of the grief she learns he had a girlfriend he told no one about. Eden finds this woman and moves into her life. The film turns grief into obsession; the narrative does not excuse Eden's behaviour and leaves plainly what the two women do to each other. Lia Elalouf leads. The camera is close and handheld. The tone is tense and the close brings no relief. Who it's for: viewers of contemporary Israeli cinema and narratives of grief. Who it's not for: viewers for whom sudden death and mourning would be difficult.
