What Compassionate Sex Is About
Laura Mañá’s first feature is a Spanish-Mexican co-production built like a fable. Dolores is a kind, middle-aged woman whose husband walks out because he cannot stand her unaccountable generosity. Trying to win him back, she devotes herself to works of charity, which turns out to mean going to bed with the men of the town. Her reputation spreads, she becomes Lolita, and eventually the whole place is at her door. The film declines to make this either a moral lesson or a dirty joke; it is about colour returning to a town that had sunk into sadness. It played at Sundance and Toronto and won best film at Malaga.
