Confidential Assignment 2: International

The North Korean detective Rim Chul-ryung comes back to South Korea chasing a cross-border criminal organisation. Kang Jin-tae, demoted to the cyber crime unit after a mistake, volunteers to work with him again in order to get back on the investigation team. This time an FBI agent joins in, and three parties pursue the same target without trusting each other. Lee Suk-hoon's film continues the series that began in 2017. The structure is unchanged: action sequences alternate with culture-clash comedy and the politics stay in the background. As a sequel it widens what worked the first time rather than looking for something new. Hyun Bin and Yoo Hai-jin return to their roles. Daniel Henney plays the FBI agent and Yoona a character carried over from the first film. Who it's for: Viewers who like Korean action comedy, the buddy formula, and anyone who enjoyed the first film. Who it's not for: The script is predictable and the humour repeats. Newcomers will be missing the history behind the character relationships.
