Corina

Corina lives in Guadalajara and has not left the same street for twenty years. Her home, her work and her shopping are on one block. Every time she steps out the door she counts her paces. She works at a publishing house doing final reads. The last volume of a famous writer's book is going to press. Corina changes the last page; she finds the ending sad and adds a sentence. The book is printed. The error comes out and there is a large problem at work. To fix it she has to find the writer, and the writer has not seen anyone for years. Urzula Barba Hopfner directs; she wrote the screenplay with Samuel Sosa and it is her first feature. Naian González Norvind plays Corina and Cristo Fernández plays Carlos. It is a Mexican production. It opened in Mexico on 9 January 2025 and had its North American premiere at SXSW. It won the audience award at SXSW; Naian González Norvind and the writers took prizes in Mexico. The matter it treats is distance; the character's limit is physical and the film shows it by counting. Its form is colourful and ordered; the compositions are symmetrical and the choice is tied to the character's need for order. The narrative defends the happy ending as an argument and says so outright. The publishing sections show the making of a book in detail. Its limit is structure; the premise is familiar and the road section proceeds close to a shape. Who it is for: viewers who like Mexican cinema and quiet comedy drama. Who it is not for: it is predictable, the style too ordered, and the conflict low.
