Cornered

Laurence Gerard is a Canadian pilot just back from the war. The young wife he met in the French resistance was killed during the occupation on the orders of a collaborator. The man's name is Marcel Jarnac and he is officially dead. Gerard does not believe it. He follows the trail to Buenos Aires, and there moves among the wealthy who fled Europe after the war; everyone smiles, nobody gives a real name, and Gerard has to keep going without knowing who anyone is. Edward Dmytryk directs, with Dick Powell as Gerard. A hundred and two minutes. A noir made immediately after the war that makes no attempt to hide its anger. A few years later Dmytryk was blacklisted as one of the Hollywood Ten.
