What Corto Maltese: The Secret Court of the Arcane Is About
The end of 1918. Civil war is running in Russia and the fighting is spreading from the Urals to Shanghai. Old generals, secret societies and mercenaries who can smell gold are all trying to take something out of the same chaos. When the sailor Corto Maltese gets back to Shanghai he runs into Rasputin, his old friend and enemy, barely survives an attempt on his life, and is approached by a Chinese secret society called the Red Lanterns. What they are all after is the gold aboard Kolchak's armoured train. Pascal Morelli's animated film is adapted from Hugo Pratt's comic, with Richard Berry as the voice of Corto. Pratt's line and the loose, indifferent tone of his sea stories both survive the transfer.
