Sergey Stolyarov What Cosmic Journey Is About
Impatient with the caution of the space institute in Moscow, the scientist Pavel Sedikh builds his own craft and sets off for the Moon with a woman cosmonaut and a boy. Made in 1936, when special effects were barely walking, the film rests on a surprisingly solid technical foundation: its scientific consultant was Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, who prepared more than thirty drawings of the spacecraft for it. Vasily Zhuravlyov’s film is counted as the first serious Soviet attempt at space on screen, and its weightlessness sequences still surprise.
