What Cossacks of the Kuban Is About
On the Kuban steppe, while two collective farms bring in the wheat, both rivalry and love spring up between them. Galina, the energetic chairwoman of one of the farms, competes with her male counterpart on the other side for the best harvest; that rival, Gordey, a former soldier, has been in love with her for years and cannot say so. At the same time Dasha, a farm worker, takes a liking to a young technician on the competing farm. A fair, a horse race and songs tie the two stories together. In Ivan Pyryev’s Soviet musical, Marina Ladynina and Sergei Lukyanov take the leads, with Vladimir Volodin and Klara Luchko in the cast. It was completed in 1950 and was much argued over later for showing postwar country life as far more abundant than it was.
