What Counterpunch Is About
The documentary follows three boxers. One is an amateur trying to make the Olympic team. One has turned professional and it is not working out. One is in his forties and wants one more comeback. All three face the same problem: boxing has lost the place it used to hold in America, the money is gone, the broadcasts are gone, and the audience has moved to mixed martial arts. Training, weight, money and injury all run at once, and nobody guarantees anybody anything. Jay Bulger directs; ninety-one minutes. Bulger had previously made a documentary about Ginger Baker. The film also goes into the sport's own argument about health: the long-term effect of repeated blows to the head is now documented, and that knowledge makes the future of the sport itself contested.
