Werner Herzog W Walter Steiner What The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner Is About
Werner Herzog's documentary follows Swiss ski flying champion Walter Steiner, a full time carpenter by trade, as he chases a world record at a 1974 competition in Planica, Yugoslavia, and actually breaks it. The film includes real slow motion footage of Steiner's dangerous falls, including one jump that goes badly wrong on camera and leaves him visibly shaken. Herzog frames the sport as inducing an almost trance like, ecstatic state in the people who practice it. Who it's for: anyone who shares Herzog's fascination with extreme human performance and obsession, and is open to a short but intense documentary. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a conventional sports documentary, since this is closer to a character study of a mental state.
