What Countryman Is About
The solitude of Countryman, a fisherman living alone on the Jamaican coast, is broken when he pulls two Americans out of the wreck of a crashed plane. The authorities invent a story about the aircraft, tying it to CIA drug and arms smuggling in order to gain ground in a coming election, and Countryman has to keep the people he rescued away from those hunting them. Dickie Jobson’s hundred and two minute film was the first production of the newly formed film division of Island Records, with Chris Blackwell producing. Its soundtrack carries Bob Marley and the Wailers, Lee Perry, Steel Pulse, Dennis Brown, Aswad and Toots and the Maytals. The man in the title role, Countryman, was a real Rastafarian fisherman from Hellshire Beach.
