What Hamburger Hill Is About
In 1969 an American company spends ten days climbing the same slope in Vietnam to take a hill. Each attempt is thrown back. The film enters no political argument and gives its characters no depth; repetition is its method, because that is what the war was for the soldiers. That the hill turns out to have no strategic value once taken is its only comment. John Irvin directed. It was overshadowed by the other Vietnam films released the same year. It was shot in the Philippines. A real warning: mud, rain and wounds are shown constantly and graphically. Because the narrative does not advance, watching it is deliberately wearing.
