What The Boys & Girl from County Clare Is About
Ireland in the mid sixties. Two brothers who have not spoken for years turn up at the same music competition, each at the head of his own ceilidh band. The rivalry starts on stage but the real matter is off it: at the root of the grievance is an old story nobody says out loud. John Irvin arranges traditional Irish music around a family reckoning. Colm Meaney and Bernard Hill play the brothers and Andrea Corr the young woman of the title. The music sequences are the liveliest and most convincing part of the film.
