What Champions Is About
The jockey Bob Champion is given a diagnosis of cancer at the height of his career and told he has eight months to live. During the months of surgery and chemotherapy, Aldaniti, the horse he rides, suffers a severe leg injury and comes close to being put down. Both of them recover against expectation and go out together in 1981 for the Grand National, the hardest steeplechase in England. The film does not turn the illness into material for heroism; the endless days of treatment are given the same weight. John Hurt plays Bob Champion in John Irvin’s hundred and six minute British film, and Aldaniti appears as himself. It was completed in 1984.
