What Lean on Pete Is About
A fifteen year old who moves to a new town with his father finds work with a man who keeps racehorses. The old horse he looks after can no longer win and will be sold. The film builds no sentimental friendship between boy and horse; the horse does not talk, does not respond, and the narrative watches the boy being left on his own. The second half turns into a road film and gets steadily harder. Andrew Haigh wrote and directed. Charlie Plummer stars, with Steve Buscemi and Chloe Sevigny in support, adapted from Willy Vlautin's novel. A real warning: there is homelessness, hunger, a death and violence. This is not a family film about loving animals.
