What Court Is About
A sewer worker is found dead inside a manhole in Mumbai, and an elderly Dalit protest singer is put on trial accused of having driven him to it with an inflammatory song. Chaitanya Tamhane watches the hearings and also the ordinary lives the lawyers and the judge go home to, so that the cruelty of the system shows up not in one outraged scene but in the adjournments and the routine. His first film won Best Film in Horizons and the Lion of the Future at Venice in 2014, and was India's Oscar submission.
