What Cow Is About
Niu'er is a villager nobody takes seriously. Partisans leave a cow in the village: a Dutch animal, brought so the wounded can have milk. The job of keeping it falls to Niu'er by lot. Then Japanese soldiers come into the village and kill everyone. What is left is the man and the cow. Everything after that is the two of them staying alive: hiding on the mountain, going hungry, protecting the animal from every group that comes past. Niu'er keeps the promise he made after every person he made it to is dead. Guan Hu directs the Chinese film, with Huang Bo as Niu'er, a performance that won him best actor at the Golden Horse Awards. It was shown at Venice in 2009. It proceeds in flashbacks and sits between a war film and a black comedy.
