Crazy, Stupid, Love.

The first half of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa’s 2011 film looks scattered: three or four relationships run in parallel and never touch. The looseness is deliberate, because a single scene in the middle ties every line together and rebuilds the story retroactively. A viewer who gives up at the forty-five minute mark never sees the design at all. The interesting part is that the two best remembered scenes are the least written. The Dirty Dancing lift, in which Ryan Gosling raises Emma Stone overhead, was not in the screenplay; it was Gosling’s suggestion. Stone panicked in rehearsal because of a fear of heights, so the lift itself was done with a double, though the scream you hear is genuinely hers. The long bedroom conversation was improvised with the script set aside. Dan Fogelman wrote the piece in 2009 with Steve Carell specifically in mind. Shooting took fifty three days in Los Angeles. The film entered the chart at number five and still finished far above its budget worldwide, a slow earner rather than a fast one. For a viewer willing to wait out a loose first hour in exchange for the reckoning in the back garden. Not for one who wants the damage of a divorce to survive to the end; the closing minutes tidy everything the middle opened.
