Critical Eleven

This 2017 Indonesian film, directed by Monty Tiwa with Robert Ronny, follows a couple who meet on a plane. Anya and Ale marry, and the loss they suffer while expecting their first child changes everything between them. The title comes from aviation: the three minutes after take-off and the eight before landing are counted the most critical. The narrative uses that analogy for the beginning and end of a relationship. It is adapted from a novel. Reza Rahadian and Adinia Wirasti lead and the film drew a wide audience in Indonesia. The narrative proceeds through jumps back in time and does not shorten its scenes of blame. Who it's for: those who like Indonesian romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers for whom the loss of a baby would sit heavily; the film places it at the centre.
