What Crosscurrent Is About
A cargo boat captain who has just lost his father finds a notebook of poems by an unknown hand, each poem marked with the name of a port city along the Yangtze. As the boat works upstream and calls at each port, he meets the same woman again and again, and each time she is younger. Yang Chao spent ten years on the film; the crew actually lived aboard a cargo boat for sixty days while crossing the river, and the images were aimed at the texture of Chinese ink painting. It was shot on 35mm. Mark Lee Ping-bing, who photographed it, won the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic contribution at the 2016 Berlinale. Qin Hao plays the captain and Xin Zhilei the woman.
