What Cry, the Beloved Country Is About
South Africa in the 1940s. Stephen Kumalo, a priest in a Zulu village, has heard nothing from his brother or his son and travels to Johannesburg. The city resembles nothing he knows. He learns that the son he came to find has been involved in a killing. The man who died was the son of a white farmer living near his own village. Darrell James Roodt directed the film from Alan Paton's novel, published in 1948, and shot it in South Africa after apartheid had ended. James Earl Jones plays the priest and Richard Harris the farmer. The telling places the two fathers not against each other but side by side. The novel was written just before racial separation was made law.
