What Cry, the Beloved Country Is About
Stephen Kumalo, a black minister from the South African countryside, travels to Johannesburg to find the sister he has heard is ill and to look for the son he has had no word from in years. It does not take him long to see how his people are living and what has happened to his own family, and a young priest, Msimangu, goes with him. Zoltan Korda shot the film in South Africa from Alan Paton’s novel. Because apartheid law would not allow a white director to associate with black actors, Korda told the immigration authorities that Sidney Poitier and Canada Lee were not performers but his own indentured servants. It was Canada Lee’s last film.
