What Currency and Peace Is About
Martin comes to Prague from Mladá Boleslav wanting to change his crowns into marks so he can travel to Germany. A black-market dealer takes him with counterfeit notes. Martin comes back to cover the debt, finds the man, and instead of taking revenge joins his crew. Even the title is built out of that world’s vocabulary: bony were the special vouchers spent in the Tuzex shops, and the men who traded them were vekslák, in a country where dealing in foreign currency was illegal. Vít Olmer’s film opened in July 1988, eighteen months before the Velvet Revolution, and showed the regime’s last black market head on.
