What The Tank Battalion Is About
Vít Olmer’s 1991 comedy adapts a novel Josef Škvorecký wrote in the 1950s that could not be legally published at home until 1990; until then it circulated in an exile edition printed in Toronto and in copies passed from hand to hand. A university graduate is conscripted and responds to the army with a quiet and total lack of interest, which puts him permanently at odds with his officers and their doctrine. His affair with a superior’s wife and the general indiscipline of the barracks say the rest about how seriously the post-war communist order was taken. It was the first feature financed privately in Czechoslovakia since 1945, and its audience of just over two million still stands as the record for a Czech film since 1990.
