What A Chinese Odyssey Part One: Pandora's Box Is About
The Monkey King of Journey to the West turns up here reborn as the leader of a desert bandit gang, with no idea who he used to be. Stephen Chow's nonsense comedy can look like pure noise for the first half hour, with jokes that are fast, inconsistent and hostile to subtitling. Underneath it sits a serious structure: a box that sends you backwards in time, a mistake that keeps repeating, and a man who keeps arriving too late. This is the first half of a two part story, so it functions as setup. It opens as farce and does not end as one.
