What Out of the Dark Is About
In an apartment block the ghost of a dead woman comes back and gives her son, her daughter-in-law and the whole building no peace. The security guards are no help. Then Leo turns up: newly out of a psychiatric hospital, convinced he is a ghost hunter, and in the habit of talking to his potted plant. His clothes and manner are taken from another film; Leo is a direct parody of Jean Reno's Léon. The film does not blend horror and comedy so much as lay one on top of the other: the same scene is genuinely frightening and completely absurd. Stephen Chow's familiar nonsense humour arrives here alongside blood and violence, and the result is counted as his darkest picture. Jeffrey Lau directed. Stephen Chow plays Leo and Karen Mok plays Kwan, the curious young woman. It opened in Taiwan on 30 June 1995 and in Hong Kong on 6 July, taking sixteen million Hong Kong dollars. Who it is for: anyone who likes Hong Kong comedy, Stephen Chow, and mixed genres. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a consistent tone. The film changes register constantly, the violence is unexpectedly harsh, and some of the humour stays closed to anyone who does not know the Hong Kong cinema of the period.
