What The Legendary La Rose Noire Is About
Wong Woo-dip, a children’s writer whose work is going nowhere, walks into a stranger’s house one night and, with her friend Kuen, ends up in the middle of an arms deal gone wrong. To get clear of the police they wipe their fingerprints and leave a note pinning it on the Black Rose, a fictional heroine known from a 1965 film. Except the Black Rose turns out to be real, and her successors turn up wanting answers. Jeffrey Lau wrote and directed it, building a comedy that both imitates and mocks the Cantonese melodramas of the sixties. It won best actor and best supporting actress at the twelfth Hong Kong Film Awards.
