What Everyone Says I Love You Is About
A musical directed by Woody Allen. The narrator, Djuna, is the daughter of a wealthy New York family. She describes her parents, her stepfather, her siblings and her mother's former husband. Everyone has a romantic problem and all of them run at once. The film's choice is this: the performers cannot sing and are left that way. No professional voices were used; everyone sings in their own voice as it is. The director did it deliberately, and most of the numbers look ordinary because of it. The songs are not new either; all are older pieces from the American songbook. The narrative moves between New York, Venice and Paris. The Venice section carries the line of the character Allen plays himself; the man uses information from his therapist to impress a woman, and the film does not present that as a moral problem. The best-known number takes place by the Seine and is technically the film's most ambitious moment. Goldie Hawn, Alan Alda, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Edward Norton, Natalie Portman and Tim Roth are in the cast. Woody Allen directed. An enjoyable experiment for anyone who likes classical musicals and light comedy. For a viewer expecting the songs sung well, the film declines to do that on purpose.
