Unfaithful

Connie, living outside New York, collides with a young bookseller during a storm in the city, and the affair starts there. Adrian Lyne spends the first half on desire and the second on consequence. The source is Claude Chabrol's 1969 film The Unfaithful Wife. Chabrol's cool detachment is replaced here by something more sensual and more American. Diane Lane carries it. The scene on the train, where she runs what just happened across her face over and over, became the centre of the campaign and brought her a Best Actress nomination, which went to Nicole Kidman for The Hours. Richard Gere plays the husband and Olivier Martinez the lover. Filming ran from March to June 2001 in New York. Five different endings were shot before the ambiguous one was chosen. Against a 50 million dollar budget it grossed 119.1 million worldwide, opening with 14 million across 2,617 theatres. Reviews split, leaving it at 50 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it is for: viewers interested in the erotic thriller and in Lane's performance. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a moral verdict. The film neither punishes nor absolves, particularly on the husband's side.
