What Daddy-Long-Legs Is About
Judy was found in a bin and raised in a harsh orphanage where the children are put to work, and she is forever clashing with the matron and the trustees over the treatment of the younger ones. Years later the wealthy Jervis Pendleton anonymously pays to send her away to be educated, and she gives her unknown benefactor a nickname. Then the two of them meet, and Judy falls for a man without knowing who he is. Mary Pickford made the film through the company she had just founded, and it settled the question of whether she could survive independently: it took one and a third million dollars.
