Onur Saylak's first film, from 2017, is adapted from Hakan Günday's novel and set in a small town on the Aegean coast. Gaza, fourteen, works with his father moving people fleeing war across to Greece, hiding the refugees in a depot, handing out their food and holding them in the queue for a crossing. He wants to study in a city, but his father keeps him inside the business and loads more onto him. The film treats trafficking not as a drama observed from outside but as a family trade, showing moral collapse as a habit passed from father to son. Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan's father is at the centre and carries the character without making him comprehensible. It screened at Karlovy Vary. Who it's for: viewers who can take hard social drama and Turkish independent cinema. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach violence, abuse and the deaths of refugees; the film does not avoid showing them.
