Dasvi

Tushar Jalota's 2022 Indian film follows an uneducated state chief minister, jailed for corruption, who decides to sit his high school examinations in prison. Ganga Ram Chaudhary's decision grows out of a contest of wills with the tough woman officer keeping him inside, while his wife takes his place and starts making her own calculations. The idea is good: how a lack of education becomes not a defect but an instrument in politics. But the story does not carry that satire all the way and turns in the final section into an inspirational tale of transformation. Abhishek Bachchan's comic timing works; Yami Gautam's officer keeps the opposing figure from being one-dimensional. The wife played by Nimrat Kaur is the film's most interesting character. Who it's for: viewers who like Indian political satire and Abhishek Bachchan's comic work. Who it's not for: anyone wanting the satire carried through, or tired of the inspirational ending.
