De De Pyaar De

Ashish is a fifty-year-old investment banker living in London, divorced, with two grown children. When his relationship with twenty-six-year-old Ayesha becomes serious he takes her to India to meet his family. Waiting at the house are his ex-wife, his two children, and a crowd of relatives with a great deal to say about the age gap. Ashish wants to give up neither the family nor the relationship, and the cost of putting the two in one room is the film's main subject. This is Akiv Ali's first film as director. The narrative uses the familiar family-gathering structure of Hindi romantic comedy but does not treat the age difference as a one-way joke; the best scenes are those between the ex-wife and the new partner. Ajay Devgn plays Ashish, Rakul Preet Singh plays Ayesha, and Tabu plays the ex-wife Manju. Tabu's performance carries the film. Who it's for: Viewers who like Hindi romantic comedy, family-centred humour, and relationships built around an age gap. Who it's not for: It runs long and the second half slides into melodrama. Some of the jokes are also built at the women's expense.
