What Dead Heart Is About
Wala Wala is a small settlement in the Australian interior. Ray Lorkin is the law there. Lorkin had kept the peace by bending the rules. Tension has been building for a long time. There is a distance between the Aboriginal community and the white settlers. Then two things happen close together. A woman has been meeting someone secretly at a sacred site. Her name is Kate and she is the schoolteacher’s wife. The man she meets is Tony. That place is untouchable for the community. Then a young Aboriginal man is found dead in a police cell. The two events bring the town to breaking point. Lorkin’s methods are no longer enough. The film tells the conflict without dwelling on detail. The story had been staged as a play first. Bryan Brown, Ernie Dingo and Aaron Pedersen appear in the hundred and four minute film, an Australian production Nick Parsons finished in 1996.
