What Dead Slow Ahead Is About
A freighter crosses the ocean. Mauro Herce boarded the Fair Lady with its mostly Filipino crew and shot for ten weeks, and what came out is a documentary that gives the ship the leading role and looks very nearly like science fiction. The hypnotic rhythm of the gears shows machinery swallowing the people who serve it: the last gestures of the old sailor’s trade being erased under the impersonal tempo of the twenty first century. Perhaps the boat is adrift, perhaps it is the last of an endangered species. The engines keep turning regardless. It won a special jury prize at Locarno.
