What Dear Thomas Is About
Thomas Brasch was born to a German Jewish family in exile in England, and the family moved to the newly founded East Germany at the start of the fifties. His father Horst believes in building the state; the son wants to write, and finds his voice as a poet by standing against it. His first play is banned, he loses his place at film school, and when he calls for protest in Berlin against the invasion of Prague in 1968, it is his own father who reports him to the Stasi. Andreas Kleinert shot the film in black and white with Albrecht Schuch as Brasch. It took the grand prize at Tallinn and nine Lolas at the 2022 German Film Awards, best film among them.
