Paths in the Night

Walter was once a man whose word counted. He held an important post at a power plant in East Germany. After unification neither the job nor that order was left. Now he is out of work and adrift. He does not know where to put his anger. He starts walking the city at night. Then he invents a task for himself. With two young recruits he patrols the trains. He punishes anyone who harasses the other passengers. He believes this is justice. He also wants his standing in his wife’s eyes back. For that he turns down a wrong road. His grip on reality keeps weakening. His marriage falls apart and the decline picks up speed. The film was shot in black and white and screened at Cannes. Hilmar Thate and Cornelia Schmaus appear in the ninety six minute film, a German production Andreas Kleinert finished in 1999.
