Death Doesn't Exist, and Love Doesn't Either

Fernando Salem's 2020 Argentine film follows Emilia, a young psychiatrist living in Buenos Aires with her boyfriend. Her life is settled but unsatisfying; she is invited back to her home town in Patagonia to scatter the ashes of Andrea, her closest friend, who died five years earlier. The journey becomes a confrontation with everything she left behind. What is interesting is that the film shows grief not as a process of resolution but as a postponement: Emilia has managed to feel nothing for five years, and the return breaks that. Antonella Saldicco's performance carries the character's emotional numbness without explaining it. The Patagonian landscape visualises the story's sense of emptiness. The narrative is slow and thin on incident. Who it's for: viewers who like Argentine independent cinema and quiet drama about grief. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and dramatic tension, or who will read emotional distance as coldness.
