What How Most Things Work Is About
Celina works at a lonely tollbooth on a desert road. A few days before Christmas her father dies and she takes up selling encyclopaedias door to door, meaning to save enough money to travel to Italy and find her mother. The film shows the selling not as a source of comedy but as daily labour; each door is a separate encounter. The account does not build large scenes of grief and gives instead repeated errands and journeys. What Celina knows about her mother is very little, and the film does not fill that gap. The irony between selling encyclopaedias and knowledge lies under the text. Veronica Gerez plays the lead in Fernando Salem’s ninety five minute Argentine film, completed in 2015.
