Death Occurred Last Night

A father reports that his twenty-five-year-old daughter has disappeared. He is a widower and on his own; he has nobody but her. A chief inspector takes the file and goes down into the dark side of Milan. When the young woman is found dead the investigation turns into a race: the police have to find the killers before the father does. Duccio Tessari directed the film from a novel by Giorgio Scerbanenco, and it belongs to the hard vein of Italian crime pictures. Frank Wolff plays the inspector and Raf Vallone the father. The telling does not make a spectacle of the victim; the real subject is the father's rage and whether the law can keep up with it. The ending is dark and offers no comfort.
