Death of a Doctor

Doctor Dipankar Roy has been working on a vaccine for years. What he is after is a vaccine for leprosy. The work strains his home life and his marriage. Things change once word of it starts to spread in medicine. He runs into the jealousy of colleagues, the incompetence of the institution and the abuse of authority. The film tells that a scientific finding is not enough on its own. How an institution smothers a success that came out of it is the real subject. The account builds no heroism; it shows the exhaustion too. Pankaj Kapur and Shabana Azmi take the leads, with Irrfan Khan also in the cast. Tapan Sinha’s hundred and thirty three minute Indian film was completed in 1990.
