What Dede Is About
In 1992, a village in Svaneti, the mountainous region in the northwest of Georgia. Young Dina’s life is drawn out by centuries of tradition, and her grandfather has promised her to David, who is returning from the war. David brings his comrade-in-arms Gegi with him, and Dina falls in love with him. The film asks whether it is possible to go against that order and what the person who does pays for it; in the tradition of the region a widow must marry the first man who asks for her hand. Mariam Khatchvani made her first film where she was born, and shows these customs not with an outsider’s curiosity but from inside. Natia Vibliani plays Dina. A co-production of Georgia, Qatar, Ireland, the Netherlands and Croatia, it screened in the East of West section at Karlovy Vary and took a special mention there.
