Jin Zi What Deep in the Heart Is About
A body burned beyond recognition is found in a mountain village and nobody knows who it is. The film tells three separate stories around that body: a village head, a matter of debt, and a woman whose husband has disappeared. It does not run in order; the same day is shown again and again through different eyes, and the audience quickly knows more than any of the characters. That is where the tension comes from. Xin Yukun's first film was made on a very small budget with non-professional actors and became one of the most discussed independent Chinese films of its year.
