What Deep Water Is About
In 1968 the Sunday Times offered a prize to the first sailor who could go round the world alone without stopping. Among those who set out was Donald Crowhurst, a businessman and amateur yachtsman whose boat was not finished, whose debts made turning back impossible, and who began radioing positions he had never reached. The documentary is assembled from Crowhurst's own audio tapes and cine film, so what you watch is a man coming apart in isolation from the inside rather than from somebody else's deck. Jerry Rothwell and Louise Osmond directed it, and Tilda Swinton narrates.
