What Defenders of Riga Is About
The eleventh of November 1919, a turning point in the fight for Latvian independence. A year after the official end of the First World War, a renegade German general and his troops are still camped outside Riga. Latvian riflemen, most of them inexperienced volunteers, somehow beat back a larger and better armed force of German and Russian mercenaries. Aigars Grauba tells the day as a moment of national founding and makes no secret of it; the film was for a long time among the most watched domestic productions in Latvia.
