What Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! Is About
Calcutta in 1943: the city is under threat of Japanese bombing, opium is moving through the streets and the British administration is busy with the war. Byomkesh, just out of university, is hired to find a missing man, and the case opens quickly onto an international drug network and wartime politics. Dibakar Banerjee takes Saradindu Bandyopadhyay's seventy-year-old character back to his youth and builds the period with a heavy atmosphere. The soundtrack is unexpected: modern rock and electronic music laid over a period film, and that choice sets the rhythm. Sushant Singh Rajput leads. The crowded shot design and colour work are unusual for Indian detective films. Who it is for: viewers who like period detective stories and formally bold Indian cinema. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a simple mystery that resolves quickly.
