Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!

There is a thief in Delhi called Lucky; he goes into houses, takes jewellery and electronics, then distributes what he has stolen among the people he knows. When he is caught the police shut him in a room and the film looks back from there: his childhood, his first fraud, the man who taught him the trade and the second life he has always maintained. Dibakar Banerjee wrote it from the story of a real criminal, a thief well known in Delhi in the eighties and nineties. It makes Lucky neither a hero nor a figure of pity; what the man actually wants is not money but to be admitted to the middle class. Abhay Deol leads and Paresh Rawal plays three separate parts. The humour is dry and built on observation. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian independent cinema and crime comedy. Who it is not for: anyone expecting songs and romance.
