Detroit

Detroit (2017) covers what happened at the Algiers Motel during the 1967 Detroit uprising. A joke made with a starter pistol at the motel is taken for gunfire by the police and the building is raided. Officers line the guests against a wall and interrogate them for hours; by the end of the night three young Black men are dead. The long middle section takes place almost entirely in that corridor. Kathryn Bigelow stages it close to real time and holds the audience somewhere with no way out. What was argued about most is the point of view. A. O. Scott wrote in The New York Times that despite being set inside Black resistance it becomes a tale of Black helplessness and passivity. Richard Brody in The New Yorker went further and called it a moral failure. How a white director and a white screenwriter told this story stayed at the centre of the argument. Historical accuracy was also contested. Melvin Dismukes, depicted in the film, said the story was 99.5 percent accurate; screenwriter Mark Boal acknowledged using poetic licence and making changes for the screen. It was shot mostly in Boston in 2016, with limited filming in Detroit because Michigan had eliminated its film incentives. John Boyega, Will Poulter and Algee Smith lead. It cost 34 million dollars and made 24.1 million. It runs 143 minutes. Good for: historical reconstruction, films about racist police violence, and sustained tension. Less good for: the interrogation section is very long and hard to endure. Little room is given to the interior lives of the victims. The trial that follows is rushed.
