What Devils on the Doorstep Is About
In a Chinese village under Japanese occupation, two prisoners are dumped one night at a peasant’s house: an unbending Japanese soldier and a terrified translator. The householder is told to keep them until the new year. The village elders convene, interrogate the prisoners and cannot decide what to do with them, while fear, hospitality and negotiation get tangled together. Jiang Wen shot it in black and white and presented the war as absurdity rather than heroism, which is why it was banned from release in China. He also plays the lead.
